In other words, it seems as if Hawthorne thought that Mather went overboard in his beliefs, was unjustified in thinking them, and Hawthorne was criticizing this. It’s funny, but it seems that Hawthorne is comparing Brown to Cotton Mather. Now, if it is a dream at what point in the story does it become one? As frightened as he was in the dark wood, how could he have fallen asleep? Being frightened out of one’s wits is certainly not conducive to dozing off! For it to be true is much more interesting, although I suppose it is harder to believe and easier to call it a dream.Īpplying Mather's ideas to "Young Goodman Brown" He thought he was resisting the devil by turning away from him, but he was really letting the devil take hold of his weakness of doubt. ![]() I think (not that this story is real ) that the town was good, and that Goodman Brown was just seeing illusions from the devil. What actually happened in the forest? Was the experience real, or was Brown dreaming ?
